Aural Skills Classes Summer 2020

For rising 9th graders through adult. Maximum 15 participants per class. Held at Gainesville Presbyterian Church.

Purpose: to develop the comprehension of sheet music and the skill of singing written vocal lines accurately at sight.

AURAL SKILLS 1 (6:00-7:25PM) and AURAL SKILLS 2 (7:30-9:00PM)

*If you are currently taking a class, you may also audit any other class for free.

TUITION

Cost is $95 for entire 5-week course, plus $10 materials fee.

Family discount
Two siblings under 18 = each sibling $85 + $10
Three or more siblings under 18 = each sibling $75 + 10 each

I am entry level/have not taken sight-singing recently…Take Level 1
I have mastered Level 1 content…Take Level 2
I have mastered Level 2 content…Take Level 3

Aural Skills Level 1 Content

Tuesdays, 6:00-7:25pm

Music Theory

  • Key signatures: identifying on staff, finding Do
    • C, G, F
  • Keys on piano
    • Identifying letter names of all 12 keys on a keyboard
  • Letter names on staff
    • Treble clef for SA, both for T, bass clef for B
  • Rhythms – count-singing, clapping, singing
    • Whole, dotted half, half, dotted quarter, quarter, eighth(s)
  • Spelling: spell scales in C, G, F

Ear Training

  • Intervals
    • m2, M2, P8
  • Chords
    • Identify and sing Major chord from any pitch, ascending and descending
  • Scales
    • Identify and sing Major scales
  • Audiating
    • Audiate Mi and Sol when given Do
    • Work toward audiating Re and La when given Do
    • Identify & sing Do-Mi-Sol from given major chord or major key piano intro

Sight-Singing

  • Sight-sing in major keys:
    • C, G, F
  • Do through Do in major keys
  • Steps and skips
  • Mostly unison or 2-part scores & excerpts, with some 3- or 4-part

    • Dotted eighth-sixteenth combinations
      • 1 _ & a
      • 1 _ _ a
    • Introduce compound meter: 6/8, 9/8, 12/8
  • Spelling: be able to spell scales in C, G, D, A, F, Bb
  • Accidentals
    • Fi in keys of C, G, D, A, F, Bb
  • Relative minor keys
    • Identify relative minor (La) of keys of C (Am), and F (Dm)
